Often described as a beanpole, Reid is tall and skinny, narrowly-built. He has light brown hair that has a bit of a curl to it, and he habitually keeps it longer, but sometimes cuts it short. Very occasionally he wears glasses, usually bulky ones. He's a fan of comfortable clothing, and mostly favors dark colors, but will also often been seen in brighter purples or whites, and is almost always in sneakers. He wears no jewelry other than a watch, which he keeps with the face on the underside of his wrist.

Noted for his social awkwardnedess and prodigal brilliance, which draws on his analytical way of thinking and establishes him as the encyclopedic brainiac of his team. He has an affinity for words - from reading at 20,000 words per minute, to his rambling of long explanations and tangents (prompting Morgan and other team members to have to tell him to be quiet). He tends to miss social cues at times, for example, unknowingly changing the subject of a conversation.
Reid is a technophobe and does not use either email or the new iPads. He's also germophobic. He is autistic, frequently finds certain textures and stimulus too much to handle, had some problems with empathy in early seasons, and is frequently prone to social blindness. (The show has hinted at potential nods towards schizophrenia and OCD, but never confirmed them).
He often comes off as very unassertive, but it's mostly because he's not as good at being physically confident as the rest of his team, and is more than capable of being verbally assertive when he needs to be. Still, his temperament is usually extremely mild and agreeable, to the point where his team finds it alarming if he snaps even a little.

Reid was born to William and Diana in Las Vegas, Nevada. He had a relatively normal childhood, though it was obvious early on that he had an exceptional intelligence. He graduated from high school at the age of twelve. Around that time, his parents divorced, and his mother's paranoid schizophrenia grew worse, leading to Reid becoming her caretaker. He was frequently bullied in school, and retains lasting trauma from it.
When he was eighteen, he had his mother placed in a mental institution, but felt great regret and guilt over it, and sent her letters every day for many years. He also labored under a fear that the schizophrenia would pass onto him, leading to a frantic need to accomplish everything he could at a young age.
In his early twenties, he attended a lecture by Special Agent Jason Gideon, and decided to join the FBI. Though he had to have some things waved (for instance, his poor aptitude with a firearm), he got in, and was the youngest FBI recruit in a long time.

This has easily enabled him to get Doctorates in Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering, and a BA in Philosophy.
